Uhuru Initiated BBI Because He was Scared of Being Impeached - MP Onyonka

Kitutu Chache Member of Parliament Richard Onyonka has sensationally claimed that President Uhuru Kenyatta initiated the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to cushion him from being impeached by allies of his deputy William Ruto.

Speaking during an interview at Citizen TV on Tuesday morning, Onyonka argued that after the 2017 election, a huge number of MPs backed DP Ruto creating tension in the President’s camp.

Onyonka claimed that the DP’s huge back in Parliament posed a threat to the President, as he could have been easily impeached. He claims that it is this that pushed the President to reach out to ODM Leader Raila Odinga and initiate BBI.

According to Onyonka, the President was keen to have the opposition on his side, therefore making it difficult for the other side to pass any motion, due to their numbers.

“BBI was not the problem of the collapse of the Deputy President. I believe President Uhuru Kenyatta was so insecure because the amount of power and the amount of Members of Parliament who used to claim they were working for the Deputy President would in fact that impeached Uhuru in the morning.

“Uhuru needed a safety net and the safety net was to bring the NASA fraternity to join with some of the members who were remaining on Jubilee for him to remain alive,” he said.

His remarks come a few days after the Court of Appeal upheld a High Court ruling declaring BBI unconstitutional.

Following the ruling, it is now almost certain that there’ll be no referendum before the 2022 elections, though reports indicate that the Attorney General may move to the Supreme Court to challenge the Court of Appeal ruling.
