The main suspect behind the defilement and murder of Ruth Wanjiku Kimani; a 4-year-old baby in Kirinyaga two weeks ago, has been arrested.

According to the DCI, 27-year-old Gabriel Muchira Muriithi was flushed out of his hideout after an operation by detectives from the agency in collaboration with their Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) counterparts.

While revisiting the gruesome murder of the baby, DCI noted that her body was found dumped along the banks of a local river, with medical examination reports indicating that she was defiled.

“On 11th August, 2021, at around 4pm, the lifeless body of baby Ruth Wanjiku Kimani, a play school pupil at Mugumo Primary School was discovered along the banks of River Karani, 200 metres from her school. Examination of the baby’s body by DCI's Crime Scene detectives established that the innocent girl had been defiled before being murdered, a fact that was corroborated by an autopsy report conducted after her murder most foul,” DCI said.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday August 30. While the charge sheet is yet to be made public, it is expected that the suspect will be charged with murder and defilement.

Muriithi’s arrest comes at a time when cases of crimes committed against children have been on the rise in the country.

Over the past few months, several people have been arrested and charged over the disappearance and murders of minors across the country.
