Four newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners have been sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Their swearing in comes a day after president Uhuru Kenyatta appointed the four;  Juliana Whonge Cherera, Francis Mathenge Wanderi, Irene Cherop Masit and Justus Abonyo Nyang’aya after approval by parliament.

The four were the successful candidates out of the 36 interviewed by the IEBC selection panel.

They took their oath of office at the Supreme Court and will serve as commissioners of the electoral agency for a period of six years.

The new commissioners will replace Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat, and former vice-chair Consolata Maina who resigned from the commission in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

IEBC is now fully constituted.

The High Court on Thursday declined to stop the swearing-in of the four commissioners, citing that the country is headed for an electioneering period and that delaying the swearing-in process is dangerous.
