A student at Egerton University is among suspects that have been arrested in connection to defrauding a Kiambu couple over Sh700,000.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Evelyne Nyanumba; a student at Egerton and Paul Nyabero Kilenya were arrested in Nakuru's Njoro sub-county over the weekend.

The two are accused of impersonating a Safaricom Customer Care operator and defrauding the unsuspecting couple.

In a statement on Monday, the DCI claimed that the suspects first defrauded sh296,652 from a Kiambu woman, after which they approached her husband and allegedly defrauded him Sh420,570.

“…In the course of the conversation, the woman had been lured into revealing some personal information, which the fraudsters used to swindle Sh296,652 from her M-Pesa and Cooperative Bank accounts.

“The swindlers furthered their felonious agenda to the woman's husband M-Pesa and Cooperative Bank accounts, from which they withdrew a total of Sh420,570,” DCI said.

Explaining how they narrowed down on the two suspects, the DCI said the operation was jointly conducted by Kiambu-based Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau detectives and the DCI, who used forensic analysis and worked with officers from Safaricom to track the suspects.

Following the arrests, a mobile handset used to allegedly defraud the victims was recovered.

The suspects are set to be arraigned at the Kiambu Law courts later today.
