  • IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said Cherera was unanimously elected in a meeting held on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

Newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Juliana Whonge Cherera has been elected the commission’s vice chairperson.

In a statement announcing her election, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said Cherera was unanimously elected in a meeting held on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

“The Commission is pleased to announce to members of the public and stakeholders that Commissioner Juliana Whonge Cherera, was unanimously elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Commission in a plenary meeting held at the Commission’s Boardroom on Tuesday 14th September 2021,” said Chebukati.

“The Commission takes this opportunity to congratulate Commissioner Cherera on her appointment,” he added.

She takes over from Connie Nkatha who deputized Chebukati up until her resignation in April 2018.

Cherera was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta alongside Francis Mathenge Wanderi, Irene Cherop Masit and Justus Abonyo Nyang’aya after approval by parliament.

They were then sworn-in by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

The new commissioners replaced Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat, and former vice-chair Consolata Maina who resigned from the commission in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
