  • Mr Wario had been charged with Misappropriating Sh55 million of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic funds, in 2016.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has been handed a six years jail term or pay a Sh3.6 million fine, after he was found guilty of abuse of office and misuse of public funds.

His co-accused Stephen Soi has also been sentenced to a 12-year jail term or a fine of Sh105 million.

The Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi on Wednesday found the former CS and former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) official Stephen Soi guilty of abuse of office and misuse of public funds.

The two were also found guilty of willful failure to comply with laws relating to the management of public funds.

Others accused alongside them were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence against them.

The court said the former CS added three other individuals to travel with Team Kenya to Rio, even after accreditation for those travelling had been closed.

Judge Juma noted that Wario did not have the authority to allow the three travel to Rio.

Wario served as Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture, and the Arts of Kenya from 2013 to 2018 and currently serves as Kenyan Ambassador to Austria, a position he has held since 2018.

The former CS alongside other officials were implicated in the Sh88 million corruption scandal that rocked team Kenya during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

184 people who travelled to Rio were paid a total of Sh150 million as allowances while the Kenyan media team of eight individuals were each paid about Sh1 million for allowances.

The court found that the officials couldn’t account for about Sh55 million of the Sh88 million Rio Olympics funds.

Charges against included; irregular payment of allowances, including unwanted persons in the Kenyan delegation in Rio and purchase of air tickets for unauthorized persons, leading to the misappropriation of funds.
