Renowned Muslim cleric and Somali scholar Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdiswamad who was allegedly abducted in Nairobi on September 8, has been released and is back with his family.
According to the family, Abdiswamad returned home on Sunday September 19, 2021.
Confirming Abdiswamad’s return, Haki Africa condemned cases of “enforced disappearance” and called for the return of other Kenyans who are still missing.
“Haki Africa together with the family of Prof Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdiswamad is pleased to inform the members of the public of the return of Prof Abdiwahab Sheikh Abdiswamad. He was returned on Sunday evening, 19th September 2021… He is now reunited with his family. Haki Africa condemns cases of enforced disappearances,” the rights group posted on its social media pages.

It is still not clear what really happened to him and who allegedly abducted him for the past 11 days. Reacting to the news of his return, netizens have urged relevant authorities to investigate the matter and establish persons behind the alleged abduction.
On September 9, 2021, reports emerged indicating that Abdiswamad was allegedly abducted by four unknown men around City market area while going about his business.
The alleged abduction attracted massive attention in the country, with a section of Muslim cleric meeting DCI George Kinoti over the matter.
The DCI launched a probe and committed to investigating the matter with an aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.
Abdiswamad is a prominent scholar and analyst with vast knowledge of the happenings in Somalia and around the Horn of Africa.
He is the Executive Director of the Institute for Horn of Africa Strategic Studies.
