President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday evening addressed the 76th Session of the General Assembly, Chaired by President Abdulla Shahid.

President Kenyatta started by congratulating President Abdulla Shahid for his election as chair of 76th session of the General Assembly and assured him of Kenya’s support.

Delivering his address under the theme 'Building resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, President Kenyatta singled 4 main issues which he requested the UN to focus on going forward.

The Head of State called for equitable global vaccine access noting that access to vaccine is at the core of “Building Back Better” from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also urged the assembly to provide tangible climate financial support to developing countries and ensure that a significant portion of “green manufacturing” is located in developing countries.

Thirdly, the Head of State noted that it is important that the member states align their conflict resolution tools to the strategic shift in threats to regional and international peace and security.

Lastly, President Kenyatta called for strengthening the competence of states to manage diversity and regional trust between citizens and institutions, and between citizens and their leaders.

The Head of State also detailed the progress made by Kenya in various fields, singling out the fight against Covid-19, efforts made towards green economy, education and the new competency based curriculum and creation of new jobs among others.

“We are implementing ambitious programmes to prepare the country to produce decent and rewarding jobs. Our investments in roads, air and port infrastructure, and critical health care facilities throughout the country, are the most extensive and ambitious in our history.

“We have also delivered a national competency based curriculum and on universal access to schooling, which will further boost competitiveness of our workforce,” his statement read in part.
