Kakamega County Chief of Staff Robert Sumbi is dead.

Reports indicated that Mr Sumbi passed away on Thursday morning, October 29.

He is said to have been battling Covid-19 for days at Kakamega Referral hospital ICU.

This comes barely a day after Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya ordered for the closure of all offices at the county headquarters for at least one week over a surge in infections among staff.

Oparanya directed that all county government staff undergo Covid-19 tests as the county registered 57 infections among medical personnel.

Covid Battle

He admitted that the county was staring at a shortage of ICU experts to help in the management of critical cases.

Prisons and health facilities have been identified as a weak link in the containment of the virus in Kakamega County.

Several officers and inmates at the Shikusa Bostol Institution have tested positive for the virus while several of them were are under self-isolation.

The governor has asked authorities in the area to arrest persons found violating Covid-19 containment protocols issued by the ministry of health.

Kenya has recorded 51,851 cases as the number of total confirmed infections in the country.
