This becomes the third train to have derailed this year after residents of Dagoretti went without train service for three days earlier this year.

The train plying the Kibera-Dagoretti-Kikuyu route was grounded on February 1, after it derailed from its tracks.

Kenya Railways worked to ensure the train resumed service.

Yesterday, Kenya Railways urged Kenyans to exercise caution and be on high alert as they cross railway lines across the country, now that traffic has increased in most of the lines.

In a statement, the corporation noted that it is an offence for any person to obstruct the service of a train or interfere with the operations of any property belonging to Kenya Railways.

The agency further noted that anyone found guilty of such an offence is liable to for ten years imprisonment.

“The last year has seen an increase in the frequency of both freight and passenger operations following the operation of our meter-gauge railway countrywide…We therefore wish to sensitize pedestrians and motorists on the importance of observing rail traffic rules to avoid accidents.

“It is a major offence for any person who unlawfully does any act to obstruct the working of a train or vehicle of a corporation which endanger or might endanger the life of any person,” the statement read in part.
