Kenyan international skipper Victor Wanyama has announced retirement from playing international football.

In a statement on Monday, Wanyama said that after representing Harambee Stars for 14 years, it's time a younger generation take over.

He went on to say that he will always be part of the Kenyan national team and their biggest supporter.

"It has been an honor to represent my Country and I think the time has come for me to pass the mantle to the young ones, I’ll always be part of the National Team and their biggest supporter," Wanyama said.

“We have shared great moments together and I am proud to have been your captain and leader. But all good things must come to an end eventually and after long consideration, I have made the really difficult decision to retire from international football,” he added.

Wanyama said he hopes to one come back to the Football Kenya Federation away from the pitch.

He reminisced how he started off by making his debut against Nigeria to becoming a regular in the team and eventually captain in the 14 years.
