Ugunja Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi has withdrawn from the 2022 Siaya Gubernatorial race.

In a statement shared via social media, MP Wandayi stated that after consultations with the ODM party, he had pulled out of the gubernatorial race.

“Following consultations with ODM leadership and the rank and file of the party and having listened keenly to the voices of my Ugunja constituents, I wish to make it known that I shall not be a candidate for the position of Governor of Siaya in 2022,” part of the statement read.

The legislator added that he will focus on campaigning for ODM leader Raila Odinga to ensure he becomes Kenya's next President in the 2022 general election.

"In the meantime, I will dedicate my time and energy to the task of ensuring Raila Odinga becomes the fifth President of Kenya in 2022 as I continue to serve the people of Ugunja," Wandayi adds in the statement.

Those in the Siaya Gubernatorial race include current governor Amoth Rasanga, former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, and police spokesman Charles Owino.
