  • Kuria argued that the impeachment push would have made sense had it been initiated in 2020 or before

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has termed an impeachment plot against Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as a distraction from other important issues facing the country.

In a statement released on Monday, Kuria claimed the impeachment motion is doomed to fail, adding that its movers should abandon it and focus on voter registration, and other electoral reforms ahead of the 2022 General Election.

According to him, the impeachment push would have made more sense had it been initiated in 2020 or before, arguing that now is too late, since there is less than a year to the next general election.

“9 months and 28 days before polling stations open in the 2022 General Elections, it is time to focus on the most important things including registering 7 Million new voters, ensuring IEBC readiness to carry out a free, fair, credible, transparent and verifiable poll, ensuring maximum peace and security of all Kenyans and their property during the transitional General Elections and safeguarding our 2022-2023 budget cycle from the vagaries of a tense political transition.

“It is not time for unnecessary distractions like the energy sapping and bound-to-fail motion of impeachment against CS Fred Matiang’i which would have made more sense a year ago than today. Let's focus. There is hardly any time left,” he said.

Last week, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali tabled a notice of impeachment motion against CS Matiang’i in Parliament.

The motion has reportedly been backed by 92 legislators who are mostly allied to Deputy President William Ruto.

Speaking at a past interview, Mohammed Ali said the impeachment motion is anchored on four main accusations that include; failure to respect court orders, abuse of office, disrespecting Members of Parliament, and lastly Interior Ministry’s failure to protect Kenyans as speculated in the Constitution.

“Yes, we are going on with the impeachment. A good number have signed the petition and they are from across the board,” Mohammed Ali told a local daily.
