Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has promised to engage NACADA on the classification of miraa as a hard drug stating that the label was not supported by science-based evidence.
CS Matiang'i mentioned that miraa farmers had complained of harassment by NACAD officials due to the classification.
“In the next two or three years, we should conclude the argument on the classification of miraa. The focus now should shift towards supporting miraa farmers and traders access more markets. We should stop this habit of bastardizing miraa farmers and traders,” CS Matiang’i said.

The CS further stated that an inter-government committee of relevant National Government ministries and the Meru County will look into streamlining and harmonizing sticky issues around growth and sale of Miraa.

"Government regards the crop as an important revenue earner and will continue to support the search for new local and international markets guided by recommendations of the Presidential Taskforce and the ongoing scientific conference," CS Matiang'i said while speaking at the launch of the National Miraa Scientific Conference on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.
While issuing an update via Twitter, Agriculture CS Peter Munya said, "Attended National Miraa Scientific Conference whose objective is to understand the impact of Miraa on health, social & economic well-being using research evidence. I assured leaders that diplomatic efforts between Kenya and foreign countries is on-course to allow the resumption of bsn."
