Kenyan Police officers have arrested 131 Ethiopian nationals believed to be in the country illegaly in Athi River, Machakos County.

They were arrested on Friday night in a multi-agency operation with officers from Transnational Crime detectives from the DCI headquarters and the Kenya National Police Service.

Their arrest was confirmed by the Athi River Sub-county Police Commander Anderson Njagi who said that the Ethiopians had hiding at an apartment in Sabaki estate.

The suspects are being held at Athi River, Kyumbi and Machakos police stations waiting to be arraigned in court on Monday.

Njagi said the individuals arrested were men without identification documentations and legal documents permitting them to be in the country.

A white Toyota land cruiser was recovered from the premises during the operation.

On July 8th 2021, 22 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia were arraigned before a Maralal court and charged for being in the country illegally.

14 of these were female while eight were male.

The 22 were arrested by police officers along the Opiroi-Barsaloi road in Samburu, on board a green Toyota Land Cruiser.
