The High Court in Eldoret has ordered the IEBC to extend the mass voter registration exercise.

The High Court in Eldoret has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to extend the mass voter registration which was scheduled to end on Tuesday, November 2 to November 9.

This is after a voter Patrick Cherono filed an application arguing that IEBC had not met its target of six new million voters.

Cherono, through his lawyer Kairia Nabasenge, sued IEBC and the parliament.

While issuing the orders on Monday, Justice Eric Ogolla stated that orders would remain in place until November 9, when the case will be heard.

As of Monday, October 25, 2021, IEBC had only registered over 760,000 voters out of a target of 6 million.

“A report will be going out soon for all the counties, but we have only done 760,000 plus, out of an expected 4.5 million. It is a very low turnout; I know Kenyans will wait until the last minute to come out. Last minute is now because we are closing on November 2,” IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said.

The country has witnessed low voter registration turnout since the exercise began a month ago.
