Fresh details have emerged on BBC journalist Kate Mitchell whose body was found in a Nairobi hotel on Friday, November 19, 2021.

Preliminary investigations indicate Kate was strangled by a man she was with in the hotel room.

According to reports, the two had a heated argument that turned into an altercation before Kate pressed the alarm bell for help.

However, the man is said to have strangled her inside the room before she could receive help.

The man died after he jumped from the eighth floor of the hotel room as he tried to escape the crime scene.

Addressing the press, Nairobi Regional Police Commander Benjamin Nthumbi disclosed that the hotel room was locked from inside.

"The man had jumped off the eighth floor of the hotel through the room’s window,” Mr Nthumbi said.

The relationship between the two remains unknown and the motive of the killing.

In an internal email to staff, BBC said the circumstances surrounding her death are not clear.

"I am so sorry to inform you of the death of our colleague from BBC Media Action Kate Mitchell. She was in Nairobi and died in her hotel yesterday.

"Kate worked with so many people over the past 14 years, particularly in Zambia, South Sudan and most recently in Ethiopia. This news will be incredibly difficult for all of us, and especially for those teams who worked closely with Kate," the email reads in part.

The email adds, "The circumstances of Kate’s death are not very clear at the moment and we are working with the UK high commission and the police in Nairobi. There is no indication that her death is connected to her work or to the BBC."
