IG Mutyambai: will be fined Sh20,000 on the spot; arrests will not be made to avoid jail congestion.

The Inspector General (IG) of Police Hillary Mutyambai has announced that violators of the  new Covid-19 guidelines issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta will be fined Sh20,000 on the spot.

In a statement released on Thursday, the IG noted that arrests will not be made to avoid jail congestion.

He also appealed to members of the public to adhere to the set guidelines in order to avoid confrontation with the police.

Addressing his officers, IG Mutyambai urged them to enforce the set guidelines in accordance to the rule of law.

“I have directed National Police Service officers to enforce curfew orders from 10:00pm to 4:00am without fear or favor and with strict adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)," Mutyambai's statement read in part.

Uhuru Announces New Measures 

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, President Kenyatta announced a new set of measures aimed at reducing the spread of the corona virus in the country after Kenya recorded increased positive cases in the past weeks.

In the address, President Kenyatta directed that all bars and restaurants allowed to operate should be closed to the public by 9 PM.

President Kenyatta also announced that political gathering in the country have been suspended for a period of 60 days.

On the nationwide curfew, the President reviewed the timing noting that the curfew will begin at 10:00pm and end at 4:00am, further noting that the same has been extended to January 3, 2021.
