Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday, December 13, 2021, a public holiday as Jamhuri Day falls on a Sunday, a non-working day.

CS Matiang'i made the announcement on Thursday, December, 9 through a notice sent to newsrooms. 

"In line with provisions of section 2 and 4 of the public holidays' act (Cap 110) it is hereby confirmed that 13th December 2021 will be a public holiday, by dint of Jamhuri Day falling on Sunday 12th December 2021.  

"This day bears profound historical significance as it marks the attainment of Kenya’s independence and the birth of the Republic. All citizens are encouraged to honour and celebrate this day in a manner that promotes unity, national cohesion and economic progress in the country," the statement read.

The government recently announced that only 11,000 people would be allowed into Uhuru Gardens during this year's Jamhuri Day celebrations. 

"In adherence to the containment measures, we will allow only 10,000 people in the public sitting area, and around 1,000 in the main dias. 

“Invitations will be done through our usual systems [Nyumba Kumi and the NGAOs structure] to ensure that there is equal participation and fair representation by all classes," Interior PS Karanja Kibicho told the press.
