On October 20, the Commander-in-Chief had directed that the Ministry of Electricity expedite recommendations given on electricity.

Kenya Power, in a statement, has stated that the Presidential directive to cut the cost of power will take effect in January 2022.

The firm, on Thursday, December 16, further stated that customers will have their January bills cut by 15pc and in two tranches in December and the other in January 2022.

 "The reduction of the cost of electricity will be implemented in two tranches of 15 percent each; with the first 15 percent, which will be achieved through initial actions focusing on system and commercial losses being reflected in the December bills, and a further 15 percent reduction in the first quarter of 2022.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta, in presiding over the 57th Jamhuri Day celebrations, emphasized his October 20 directive to cut the cost of electricity to consumers.

On October 20, the Commander-in-Chief had directed that the Ministry of Electricity expedite the implementation of the Presidential Taskforce on Power Purchase Agreements recommendation.

“In honor of this pledge to the nation, and in response to the concerns over the high cost of electricity raised by both individual consumers and enterprises, I am pleased to announce to the nation that the reduction of the cost of electricity will be implemented in two tranches of 15 percent each,” he directed.

This is after the Cabinet Secretary of Interior, Dr. Fred Matiang'i, had asked Kenya Power to review existing power purchases.

“We are all concerned about the cost of power. Our bills are too high, and we have taken tough decisions to deal with challenges in this sector with the focus being the bringing down of the cost of power,” stated the CS
