President Uhuru Kenyatta has held talks, through a phone call, with US Secretary of State Antony Bliken over a wide range of issues of mutual interest.

A statement by State Department Spokesperson Ned Price indicates that the two discussed security situations in Somalia and Ethiopia.

On Ethiopia, they both agreed on the need to end human rights abuses and violations even as the US secretary endorsed President Uhuru's mediations efforts.

"In Ethiopia, they agreed on the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities, unhindered humanitarian access, an end to human rights abuses and violations, and a negotiated resolution to the conflict.

"The Secretary expressed the strong support of the United States for the mediation efforts of President Kenyatta and AU Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Olusegun Obasanjo," a statement by Price reads.

The two also deliberated on the Somali's elections situations.

They emphasized the need for free and fair elections processes that will enhance the credibility of the outcome.

"On Somalia, the Secretary underscored the importance of Somalia’s national and Federal Member State leaders concluding parliamentary and presidential elections immediately and free from irregularities that would jeopardize the credibility of the outcome," Price added in the statement.

The State Department spokesperson added that the U.S. is opposed to the attempted suspension of Prime Minister Mohamed Roble adding that all parties should refrain from escalatory actions and statements.
