Twenty-three General Service Unit (GSU) officers who were caught on camera making reckless remarks following their graduation in December 2021 have been sent on leave.

This after they completed a three-month retraining course at a training camp in Magadi, Kajiado County.

The officers were among 2,502 constables who graduated from the National Police Training College in Embakasi B Campus on December 10.

Immediately after the graduation, a video of the officers went viral, in which they made remarks that implied a violent approach to how they would deal with law offenders.

The National Police Service (NPS) responded by failing to station the officers pending the conclusion of a probe into the incident.

They were held at the National Police College Embakasi B Campus in Nairobi where the graduation took place.

In the video, the graduands could be heard shouting that they "are finally out" and they are the "bad squad in red beret," as they flashed finger gestures implying gun violence.

“Tunakuja nje…hawa ni wale wazii…squad 26…papapa (We are coming out there…we are the bad ones…Squad 26…then imitates the sound of gunshots),” the junior officers said in the clip.

In a statement, NPS condemned the actions of the officers saying it was not a representation of the police service that they were coming into.

“We wish to clarify and assure the public that the behaviour portrayed in the clip is not acceptable and does not reflect the values of the GSU, KPS and the NPS,” the statement read in part.
