Kisumu sub-county police commander Anthony Maina said the situation has been contained after KPC shut down the line to avert any danger.

A technical team from the Kenya Pipeline Company has managed to contain an oil leakage from one of its pipes that burst in Kisumu on Thursday night.

Thousands of litres of diesel fuel were lost after the tragedy with Kanyamedha and Obunga slums areas wetted by the spillage. 

Kisumu sub-county police commander Anthony Maina said the situation has been contained after KPC shut down the line to avert any danger.

"We got information at about midnight and by the time we arrived at the scene there was spillage into the area," Maina said.

No causality was reported. Investigation into the incident has commenced ascertaining the cause of the tragedy.

Images emerging on social media showed a section of residents trying to scoop the diesel that was flowing down the streams and drainages.

The busy Kondele-airport road was closed after the tragedy to prevent any fire incident. Police barricaded the road, rendering it impassable.

A multi-agency team comprising of police and firefighters and officials from Kenya Pipeline Company pitched a tent in the area and blocked citizens from accessing the main pipe to siphon fuel.

It was, however, opened after the situation was contained. 

Efforts were also launched to prevent the oil from reaching the nearby River and lake to save aquatic life.

The litres of fuel closed because of the tragedy yet to be identified.
