Presidential hopeful Dr Mukhisa Kituyi has shelved his ambitions to back ODM leader Raila Odinga for the top seat.

Addressing a rally on Friday, the former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) secretary-general said that he had been in negotiations with Raila for the past three weeks.

"I have come to request my people of Kimilili to allow me to join Raila's national campaign team. I would want to be close to him so that if he (is elected) my path can also be opened," Dr Kituyi told a charged crowd at an Azimio la Umoja rally in Bungoma.

He further told the Bungoma residents that he had dropped his presidential dream in order to team up with the former Prime Minister to deny Deputy President William Ruto the top job.

"I still have the ambition of being President but I am in talks with Mr Raila to see how we can join forces to stop Ruto from clinching the presidency," he added.

Dr Kituyi was upbeat a while ago about running for the presidency after he resigned from his plum job in the United Nations.

He has previously served as a Trade and Industry Minister between 2002 and 2007 under retired President Mwai Kibaki’s government.
