Deputy President William Ruto has said that every fear he had about ODM leader Raila Odinga before his golden handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta has come to pass.
Speaking during an interview in the United States, DP Ruto said that he had been briefed about the handshake and that Mr Odinga had requested to be facilitated to retire from politics.
“I remember asking do you expect him to retire? I know Raila and know his games, every fear I had has come to pass,” said the Deputy President.
DP Ruto admitted that he had no problem with the handshake but everything they had initially agreed on changed.
He noted that changing the constitution was not part of the handshake deal
“We did not discuss that the handshake would kill the opposition, we didn’t agree that this was an exercise that would involve changing the constitution.”
DP Ruto said that the handshake lost the country's opposition and ruling party, which made the country to lose direction on the development agenda they had set out.
“Everything we did not agree on, became the handshake. We lost the opposition, we lost the ruling party, we lost direction and the big four agenda,” he stated.
The Deputy President's interview came during his tour of the United States. He left the country on Sunday last week for a 12-day tour of the United States, United Kingdom and Qatar.
Speaking in during the Sagana III meeting, President Uhuru Kenyatta had called out DP Ruto for lying to Kenyans about the handshake.
President Uhuru said the DP was aware of every step he made towards the handshake but refused to be part of it.
