The 46 candidates are said to have disappeared long before the KCPE exams kicked off nationwide.

46 KCPE candidates in Mbeere North, Embu County are reportedly missing after they failed to show up at their examination centres for the national exams.

According to a report by the Nation, the 46 candidates are said to have disappeared long before the KCPE exams kicked off nationwide.

Addressing the media after confirming the incident, Embu County Director of Education James Kairu said they had looked for the candidates but the efforts were unsuccessful.

"It is true some candidates did not sit for the national examination because they could not be found. We looked for them unsuccessfully," Mr Kairu stated, as quoted by Nation.

According to Kairu, it is, however, suspected that the candidates may belong to the families that were evicted from the disputed Tana and Athi River Development Authority land last year.

"I think the candidates were relocated to an unknown place after their families were destabilized during the evictions," Kairu added.

Candidates in the region, however, continued with their exams today as the Eastern Regional Director of Education guaranteed all the 196,434 candidates their security.

This comes even as Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha dismissed claims that candidates were being attacked while doing their exams.

Magoha maintained that the candidates’ security is paramount and that all candidates, even those in volatile regions, will remain safe until the examinations are concluded.
