An elected member of the Makueni County Assembly has resigned from his position in a rare political development.
On Tuesday, kitise Ward Representative Kelvin Mutuku handed in his resignation letter with immediate effect.
It is believed that Mutuku decided to step down in anticipation of being appointed the Makueni County Clerk.
A report from the speaker's office confirmed the resignation.
"The office of the Hon. Speaker has this morning Tuesday, November 17 at 8:30 am received a resignation letter from Hon. Kevin Mutuku," read the report in part.
Before resigning, Mutuku served as a Chairperson of the Chairpersons' Panel Committees.
The speaker's officer thanked Mutuku for his service and interest in putting people's needs first.
"Hon Kevin Mutuku was a dedicated member of the Chairpersons panel as the first chairperson of Committees as provided for under Standing Order No. 18 of the County Assembly Standing Orders and as a member of the other Assembly Committees.
"His leadership as the Chairperson for the Public Investments and Accounts Committee (PIAC) will be remembered by this House, the PIAC Committee and the County Executive for the thorough inquiry and investigations on the accounts and workings of the county executive, the autonomy and efficiency of the County Public Investments and utilization of funds," added the speaker.
Furthermore, Mutuku's contributions have been cited as instrumental towards making Makueni the best performing assembly in the country.
In the race for the county clerk job, Kako MCA Dennis Musyoka was among the shortlisted candidates.
Mutuku becomes the second elected politician in the country to resign.
In 2015, Kericho Senator Charles Keter stepped down from his position after being appointed the Energy Cabinet Secretary.
