The former Nairobi governor said that he was exercising his democratic right to belong to a party of his choice.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has resigned from the ruling Jubilee party.

In a letter to the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led party on Friday, Sonko said that he was exercising his democratic right to belong to a party of his choice.

“Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation as a member of Jubilee Party effective March 10, 2022. This is in the exercise of my rights to belong to a political party of my choice as enshrined under the Constitution of Kenya,” the letter by Sonko read in part.

The former county boss further thanked the ruling party for the opportunity to serve as governor.

“I wish the Party and the esteemed members all the best in the future," he added.

The flamboyant politician was elected on a Jubilee party ticket to Nairobi’s top job in 2017 before being ousted from office in 2020.

Sonko was back in the headlines a few days ago after the US government banned him and his family from setting foot in the United States of America.

According to a statement by US embassy Counselor for Public Affairs Eric Watnik, Sonko was hit by the ban over his alleged corrupt dealings while he was Nairobi County's boss.

“The department has credible information that the former governor was involved in significant corruption when serving as governor of Nairobi. We determined that he received bribes in kickbacks in exchange for irregular awarding of contracts to his associates for personal gains,” Watnik stated.
