The former police spokesperson has announced his new party.

The former National Police Service Spokesperson Charles Owino has quit the Orange Democratic (ODM) Party.

Mr. Owino joined the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party on Tuesday to deputise Nicholas Gumbo in the Siaya gubernatorial race.

Mandera Governor Ali Roba received Mr. Owino at the party's headquarters in Nairobi.

The former police spokesperson had shown interest in Siaya's top position in the upcoming polls, but he has shelved his ambitions.

Mr. Owino joined the Raila Odinga-led ODM party on March 5 and was welcomed by Alego-Usonga branch ODM officials in Siaya town after he resigned from the public service.

“This should put to an end the wildly held allegations that I am not in ODM. Now that I have removed my police uniform, I call on my opponents to prepare for a tough battle," Mr. Owino stated upon joining ODM.

He was expected to battle it out with Siaya Senator Orengo among other aspirants for the party's ticket. He previously said that he was not afraid of nominations.

However, he declared that he would quit the Orange party if circumstances became unfavourable to him.

It is, however, unclear why Mr. Owino quit ODM to support the former Rarieda Member of Parliament's gubernatorial bid.

On his ambitions to join politics, Owino said that he was determined to change the lives of the residents of Siaya County. He had served in the police service for 29 years.
