Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has issued an update on the dusk to dawn curfew imposed in some parts of Garissa County.

In a statement on Friday, the CS stated that the curfew will be reviewed by the government ahead of the Ramadhan period.

The dusk to dawn curfew in parts of Garissa County has been effective since Wednesday, March 23.

This followed frequent attacks that were being experienced in the area, prompting the government to impose the strict measure.

Security had been enhanced in the region after CS Matiang’i cited retaliatory attacks that led to the loss of lives and destruction of property.

Affected areas were Waberi East location (Bulla Othan and Bulla Mzuri), Waberi West location (Bulla Tawakal), and in Iftin location, Bulla Rakham in Garissa central.

"In accordance to section 8 (1) and Section 3 of Public Order Act, the Cabinet Secretary of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government has ordered a 6pm-6am curfew for a period of thirty days (30) effective Wednesday, March 23, 2022," Matiang’i stated in an earlier statement.

The move to review the curfew comes after the National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement regarding the event-packed April.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso stated that the police had collaborated with their multiagency partners to enhance security in all public spaces.

Residents of Garissa County are majorly Muslims, and they’re expected to welcome the Holy month of Ramadhan beginning April 2.
