A record 46 aspirants are seeking to run for the presidency as independents in the August 9 polls.

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi now claims that there could be a plan to rig deputy president William Ruto's votes in the August 9, polls.

Speaking in Nyamira County on Wednesday during the Kenya Kwanza Alliance economic forum in the area, Mudavadi poked holes in the number of independent candidates running for the Presidency.

He questioned why the number was so high than ever saying it is an indication that the state could be planning to scuttle the DP's votes.

"Why so many independents? Why? It could be that there are those who have discovered that spoiling Ruto's votes cannot be achieved in a manner they earlier envisaged. It could be that these independent candidates are projects to divide votes and spoil for Ruto," Mudavadi said.

A record 46 aspirants are seeking to run for the presidency as independents in the August 9 polls. This is an exponential rise from only 3 who vied as independents in the 2017 polls.

The remarks come even as Ruto's Presidential secretariat alleged on Wednesday that a number of Cabinet Secretaries are taking up roles with an intention to influence the August polls.

Their complaints came after ICT CS Joes Mucheru said they will be working with Raila to ensure a free and fair poll.

The DP's campaign secretariat has now written to IEBC urging to crack the whip on Mucheru and other CSs implicated in the rigging plot.

Others fingered include Fred Matiang'i (Interior), Wamalwa Eugine (Defence), Peter Munya (Agriculture) nad Mutahi Kagwe (Health).
