The National Police Service (NPS) in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a crackdown on non-compliant motor vehicles and motorists after an increase in the number of road accidents.

In a statement by police spokesperson Bruno Shioso on Wednesday, June 8, it was regrettable that many road accidents were caused by human-related factors.

Shioso said that the directive would take effective immediately reminding road users to be vigilant when using the road.

“The Inspector-General of Police and the NTSA director-general has directed a joint multi-agency crackdown to weed out all non-compliant motor vehicles and motorists who are violating the Traffic Act and related laws. The directive takes immediate effect,” read part of the statement by Shioso.

The police spokesperson said that a total of 1,968 deaths had been recorded as of June 3, 2022, compared with 1,800 in the same period last year.

He added that non-compliant vehicles shall be kept off the road asking all road users to co-operate with law enforcement agencies.

“All motorists and other road users are requested to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies at the national and county levels towards achieving the objectives of this initiative. Non-compliant vehicles shall be kept off public roads,” he stated.
