- Governor Sonko was Monday briefly arrested and released

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has condemned the chaos that marred his meeting at Riverside where he was temporarily arrested and released by police.

Sonko was meeting MCAs who support him ahead of an impeachment motion against him.

The Governor maintained that he had no problem with anyone but insisted they needed to solve the budget stalemate.

"Nairobi regional police commander stop taking orders from Nairobi County Assembly majority leader Abdi Guyo who liedv2 to the President that Hon. Mcas have appended 86 signatures on my impeachment motion. We will not allow that. No amount of abuse of police power or intimidation should bow us down," part of his statement read.

The Governor also hinted at supporting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) document stating that the issues they had a problem with especially devolution, had been addressed.

A section of leaders condemned Sonko's arrest stating that police should not be used for 'political purposes'.

"Arresting Mike Sonko for meeting MCAs in the week of his impending impeachment is nothing short of using the police for politics. Just as happened in Senate, this must be condemned whether you support the governor or not. Let’s not claw back on democracy using COVID as an excuse," Senator Johnson Sakaja.

"Mike Sonko is being impeached because he has said no to impunity! Section 109 of the PFM acts & Article 219 detail how funds should be accounted for as well as transferred to the County Government! Article 187 (2a,b) should maturely guide how NMS is funded. Not threats!" Senator Ledama Olekina.

The embattled Nairobi County Boss is facing impeachment by the Nairobi County Assembly.
