A court has temporarily stopped Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's impeachment.

On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, the court also barred the County Assembly from discussing the motion pending the interparty hearing on Thursday.

This new development comes after meeting convened by the Nairobi Governor to strategise against his looming impeachment was violently dispersed in the city Monday.

Police lobbed teargas to disperse a group of County Assembly members who had called a press conference after a meeting with Sonko, in which they disowned signatures to impeach him.

A motion to remove Sonko from office was started by Minority Leader Michael Ogada.

Ogada tabled the notice of impeachment with a list of 86 MCAs he claimed had appended their signatures to allow the process to start.

MCAs want to impeach Sonko for failing to approve Sh37.4 billion budget to help the operations undertaken by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).
