  • Kenyan healthcare workers at public hospitals went on strike, leaving patients hanging

A nurse at the Kakamega County General Hospital collapsed and died amid the ongoing nationwide strike by health workers.

Wycliffe Alumasa had been ill for a week but his condition worsened when he had difficulties breathing.

He collapsed and died at his home in Shikangania village, Lurambi constituency.

Reports by the Nation indicated that his wife Veronica Alumasa is also sick.

County health executive Collins Matemba confirmed the reports adding that samples had been obtained from the nurse for testing.

Amid rising coronavirus cases and the deadly toll the pandemic is taking on front-line health workers, Kenyan healthcare staff at public hospitals on Tuesday went on strike, leaving patients hanging.

The striking healthcare workers lamented that many of their colleagues are dying from COVID-19 due to a lack of both protective gear and health insurance.

The Kenyan National Union of Nurses (KNUN) said its 23,000 members will not resume work until their grievances are addressed by the government.
