President William Ruto has asked Cotu boss Francis Atwoli for forgiveness over remarks he made after the trade unionist asked Kenyans at his rural homes "to cut trees for he is not going to win the presidency".

The president while addressing a group of leaders from Western Kenya on Thursday said even though the SG could have made such remarks, he equally fired back at him in a disrespectful manner.

"Atwoli had told people to cut down trees and I also know that as a young man, I might have disrespected him and for that, I ask him to forgive me," Ruto said.

The remarks by the President come barely a week after he met the Cotu secretary general at State House Nairobi.

The two were sworn enemies ahead of the August 9 General elections.

Atwoli had numerous times claimed that Ruto would not make it to the top seat even as he drummed up support for the ODM leader Raila Odinga.

But after Raila lost the polls, the Cotu SG went under and has since been warming up to the President leading to the events that saw them meet at the state house and Kakamega State Lodge.

At the Kakmega meeting, he even defended the President from attacks over his manifesto saying it is too early to judge him on what he promised Kenyans.
