A police officer shot himself dead in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia county on Thursday night.

Corporal Rionosia Maiywa is reported to have turned the trigger on himself at his house at Cherangany police station.

According to a police OB report, the matter was reported at the same station by one of the deceased’s colleagues.

It was reported as a shooting-suicide incident at 8.00 pm on Thursday.

The deceased was found dead and seated on a plastic chair inside his house.

No suicide note was found in his house.

“It was reported by the officer in charge of lines and armoury that two gunshots had been heard from corporal Rionosia Maiywa’s house," police said.

"Police officers led by the sub-county police commander, sub-county criminal investigations officer and OCS Cherangany visited the scene. They broke the door and gained entry into the deceased's house.”

The deceased was armed with an Ak47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

He had administered exams during the day and was to go on a night patrol.

The scene was processed and the body was moved to Kitale County referral hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
