Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has disclosed that the government will set up a new plan to compensate the families of police officers who die in the line of duty.

Speaking on Friday, December 16, during the 4th memorial ceremony for 53 police and 4 prison officers who have died on duty since November 2021, Kindiki said that the government will set up a  Benevolent Fund for the families.

According to the Ministry of Interior, a team from relevant institutions has already been set up to work on the modalities of operationalizing the fund. 

"Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has announced that the Government will set up a Benevolent Fund for families and dependents of police and prison officers who fall in the line of duty," read a statement by the Ministry.

"A team from relevant institutions has been set up to work out the framework to operationalize the Fund that will enhance and consolidate benefits for fallen officers," the statement further read.

Kindiki further maintained that he was committed to fast-track the last payments, gratuities, and pensions of the fallen officers.

The CS made the remarks even as police IG Japhet Koome, who attended the same event, advised police officers not to hesitate to use firearms to protect themselves and the citizens.

"We shall not be intimidated. We have the mandate to protect life and property. I repeat, we shall not be cowards," Koome said.
