67 out of 69 Meru MCAs voted to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Senate Speaker Amason Speaker has set Tuesday, December 20, as the hearing date for Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment.

In a gazette notice dated December 16, Kingi notified all senators to convene at the Senate chambers for the special sitting as from 2:30 p.m. in the gazetted date.

"I have appointed Tuesday, December 20, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Seante Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 p.m. The business to be transacted in the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the governor of Meru County," read part of the notice.

The Senate Speaker further stated that Mwangaza's impeachment shall be the only business to be discussed during the special sitting, after which the Senate will remain adjourned till February 14, 2023.

"In accordance with Standing Order 33 (5) of the Senate, the business specified in this notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the special sitting following which the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 2.30 pm in accordance with the Senate calendar," Kingi added.

Governor Mwangaza's impeachment was supported by 67 out of 69 MCAs. Two MCAs were absent during the voting.

At the Senate, there are two ways in which the matter can be determined.

One is a plenary during which parties will be allowed to defend their case before senators who will later vote to decide their fate.

Another way is through a committee of 11 members which will have to be formed to hear the matter.
