Maina's arrest comes after baby Sagini's mother Maureen Nyaboke was arrested as she was leaving the Kisii Eye hospital on Sunday where she had gone to see her son.

According to the police, the 28-year-old has been working as a barmaid in Nyamakoroto in Gesima Ward, Nyamira County.

Maureen left the three-year-old and her 7-year-old sister in the hands of their stepfather under unclear circumstances before the incident happened.

Meanwhile, doctors handling Baby Sagini say he is ready to be discharged but can't leave the hospital owing to the circumstances surrounding the ongoing investigations at his home.
