Ex-Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has endeared himself to Kenyans thanks to his charitable acts.

Despite his numerous instances of controversy, former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has always redeemed himself through his charitable works.

The politician has been hailed for the compassion and magnanimity he has had on Kenyans who are desperate for help.

Below are some of the needy cases that got his attention and to which he positively responded.

1. Conjestina Achieng'

In July this year, Sonko took upon himself the responsibility to take the one-time boxing legend to a rehabilitation center after her condition worsened.

Conjestina's mental state was in shambles; she had burnt her house in Siaya county leaving Kenyans sympathizing with her.

Sonko sent his team to Siaya where they found the former boxer with her son who had sought help.

"Despite my busy court schedule and tribulations, I have decided to continue helping her including taking her to Mtumishi prophetess Mary Kagendo for prayers,"

"I am just now dispatching a car with my team to Siaya to facilitate her movement and I'm also humbly appealing to any well-wisher who is willing to help tusaidiane sote kwa huyu shujaa in any little ways we can," Sonko stated.

The politician admitted Conjestina to the Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini, Mombasa county, where she has been getting better by the day.

In his last update concerning the matter, Sonko said Conjestina was doing well and she was even contemplating returning to the ring.

2. Alvin Chivondo

The 22-year-old had been handed one year in jail after shoplifting at a Nairobi retail store.

In his defense, he said he stole the foodstuffs to feed his starving wife and infant.

His case moved Kenyans, with Sonko coming in to offset the KSh 100,000 fine that would be an alternative to the sentence.

Besides securing his freedom, Sonko gave the man a job at his Upper Hills offices in Nairobi.

The would however return to his habits and was arrested again after shoplifting at the same outlet.

3. Baby Sagini

This would be Sonko's latest act of charity.

He has teamed up with Kitutu Chache North MP Japhet Nyakundi to ensure Baby Sagini Junior whose eyes were gouged out in Kisii undergoes a transplant.

In a statement on their respective social media handles, the two leaders said they have identified a hospital in China that will help the baby to see once more.

"I have this afternoon conducted thorough research on which is the best hospital that can at least attend to Baby Sagini's emergency case and found there's a hospital in Shenzen South China called Dennis Lam Eye Hospital which does eye implants," Sonko said in an Instagram post.

Before taking a flight to China, Baby Sagini will be reviewed and recommendations issued by ophthalmologists and eye specialists at the Westlands laser eye hospital.

Sonko said the hospital in China requires a referral from at least two Kenyan hospitals.

The implants are a precursor to fitting the boy with prosthetic eyes that will look and move more like normal eyes but do not restore vision.

The youngster was kidnapped before the attackers gouged out his eyes.

4. Kenyans in gulf nations

Sonko has also been involved in rescuing Kenyans trapped in gulf nations where they are maltreated by their bosses.

For instance, in September this year, the governor came to the rescue of Diana Chepkemoi whose sad videos had gone viral.

The Meru University student had appealed for help after her efforts to get a job in Saudi Arabia turned a poisoned chalice for her.

Sonko promised to fly her back to Kenya and help her continue with her education.

"Thanks for Tagging me I can assure you we will rescue her situation by the end of the day. This is a Kenyan girl called Diana Chepkemoi, a Meru University student who went to find work in Saudi Arabia. She went healthy, now she is enslaved,"

Chepkemoi later reunited with her friends and relatives after she returned to Kenya after the intervention of the politicians alongside other Kenyans of goodwill.

Sonko has also helped in the repatriation of bodies of Kenyans who died in the gulf nations.
