Four people have been confirmed dead and 16 others injured in a road accident involving a matatu.

The accident occurred along Kakamega- Mumias Road specifically in the Eshirakalu area on Tuesday evening.

Three men who were aboard the matatu died on the spot while one died while receiving treatment at the Saint Marys Mission hospital in Mumias.

Several of the injured passengers were also rushed to the same mission hospital for treatment.

The accident was occasioned by the bursting of the front tire of the matatu which was heading to Mumias.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road before rolling several times.

Mumias East sub-county police commander Mohammed Mahamdu confirmed the incident saying investigations have been launched into the accident.
