Eleven people were on Saturday night, October 8, killed and several others injured in a tragic road accident at Subuiga along the Meru-Nanyuki road.
According to the police, the accident, which involved a matatu, bus and trailer, claimed the eleven lives on the spot.
Witnesses detailed that the bus was overspeeding and hit the matatu in a head-on collision as it tried to overtake before dragging it away to hit a trailer.
Confirming the incident, Eastern police boss Rono Bunei said that it was unfortunate that many lives were lost in the accident, adding that the scene was a black spot.
“The scene of the accident is a black spot. It is unfortunate we have lost many lives,” Mr Rono stated.

The incident comes amid a rise in road accidents in the country with data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showing that 15,924 road crashes were recorded in the country from January 1 to September 26, 2022.
In a statement on September 28, NPS spokesperson said that most of the causes of the accidents were preventable.
The National Police Service (NPS), in collaboration with NTSA, launched a crackdown on motorists who did not comply with road safety requirements.
"From our assessment, the increase was mainly attributed to preventable and predictable factors. Non-usage of seat belts by commuters, driver behavior such as speeding leading to loss of control in high occupancy vehicles and poor mechanical conditions of vehicles resulting in brake failures and tyre bursts were some of the noted causes," Shioso said.
