Sabina Chege was on Friday last week insulted by Azimio politicians during a rally in Machakos.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei has reached out to Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua after Deputy Minority Leader Sabina Chege was insulted by a section of Azimio politicians.

In a statement on Tuesday, February 14, Shollei urged Karua to intervene and stop Azimio politicians from insulting female leaders during their protest rallies.

“It is unacceptable and appalling what Azimio rallies are degenerating into with our Big Sister Hon Martha Karua watching and condoning the happenings in this theatre of absurd. At the very least, we ask Hon. Martha Karua to put her foot down and refuse this wanton attempt to turn AZIMIO events into the place where women leaders are insulted, demeaned and subjected to mean-spirited name-calling and uncalled-for sexual innuendos,” Shollei stated.

The Uasin Gishu Women Representative asked Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga to respect Sabina Chege noting that she had made huge sacrifices for the coalition during the 2022 general election.

“After the huge political and personal sacrifices that our sister Hon Sabina Chege made for AZIMIO in the last election season, the least she deserves from ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga is respect, not the unprintable insults he hurled at her during Machakos Rally on Friday. No Kenyan who deserves to be subjected to such crude insults even by a mad person, let alone by a Statesman of Raila's stature,” she stated.

Shollei also weighed in on Mumias East MP Peter Salasya’s remarks on Bomet Women Rep Linet Toto noting that the country is headed in the wrong direction if Azimio leaders can watch women leaders being insulted in front of them.

“As woman leaders, we call on our brothers in the Opposition to be measured in their comments and attacks against our fellow Women Leaders whether in their camp or our camp. We have come too far in the question for Gender Equality in this country, nobody should think we will fold our hands and let them reverse the gains we have made as women to be treated equally and with respect by all Kenyans including our esteemed leaders,” she stated.

Shollei further asked Raila Odinga to apologize to Sabina Chege and Peter Salasya to apologize to Linet Toto immediately.

“We will take the unfortunate statement of the Former PM Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga as a slip of the tongue and urge him to correct the impression he may have created by apologizing immediately to our sister Hon Sabina Chege. In the same breath, we ask Hon Peter Salasya to apologize to the Bomet Women Rep,” said the National Assembly Deputy Speaker.
