Muthama beat 8 candidates shortlisted for the position to emerge favourite.

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has resigned as the UDA party chairman.

His resignation comes ahead of his vetting as non-MP member of the Parliamentary Service Commission.

In an interview with Nation, the Senator confirmed that he is now handing over the office to take up his new role.

“I have handed over my resignation to the party headquarters. What I am currently doing is proper handing over to the party secretariat,” he told Nation.

To be non-MP member of PSC, the law requires that one should not engaged in any other political activity.

Only the President and Deputy President are exempted by the law.

“A full-time State officer shall not participate in any other gainful employment. Any appointed State officer shall not hold office in a political party,” reads Article 77 (1, 2) of the Constitution.

Other who were shortlisted are former Kisii Governor James Ongwae, former MP Chris Wamalwa, Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, former Aldai MP Cornelly Serem, former Matungu MP David Aoko and Aruma John Ekale.
