Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Nigeria ahead of his African Union (AU) role.

In a statement via Twitter on Tuesday, February 21, the retired President stated that he arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja ahead of his role as the AU lead observer in the Nigeria General Election set to be held on Friday, February 25, 2023.

“The 4th President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta arrives at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria ahead of the country’s General Elections to be held on 25th February 2023,” the statement read.

AU Chairman Moussa Faki had appointed Uhuru to lead a team of 90 members from various AU member states to observe the Nigerian general election.

"The African Union Commission(AUC) announces the launch of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM). The AUEOM will be led by His Excellency Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, former President of the Republic of Kenya," the AU statement read.

The team of observers comprises representatives of election management bodies, civil society organisations, independent experts, women, and youths as well as AU organs.

The observers will among other tasks, engage different stakeholders as well as observe and provide an accurate and impartial assessment of the electoral process in Africa’s most populous country.
