Police claim they were overpowered by irate youths forcing them to use live bullets.

A  Maseno University student on Monday died during the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya alliance mass protest along the Kisumu-Busia road.  

The third-year university student died after he was shot dead in the neck and attempts to rush him to the hospital saw him declared dead on arrival. 

A police statement on his death claims that the victim was among a group of boys who invaded a supermarket and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia road. 

The report further indicates that the group went ahead and lit bonfires and barricaded stones along the road.

"After some time, the students started pelting stones at the police line where they damaged window panes in ten houses and the police station", it read in parts. 

The police in the report say they were overpowered by the group and having run out of teargas, they resorted to using live bullets. 

"This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets. Consequently, the 3rd year student was hit on the neck", the police report read.

The report stated that six police officers were injured during the skirmishes.

Attempts to save his life were futile as he was declared dead upon arrival at Coptic hospital.
