  • IEBC reminds political parties on the deadline if they intend to participate in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
  • Independent candidates also reminded to submit the needed material by close of business, Monday.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reminded political parties intending to front candidates for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat of the impending Monday deadline.

A statement issued on Monday by the electoral body asked parties to forward the names of their candidates before close of business today.

In addition, IEBC called on independent candidates to submit their names and symbols they intend to use within the same deadline.

"Deadline Reminder: By-election for County Governor, Nairobi City County; Each political party intending to participate in the By-election, shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Monday 28th Dec. 2020.

Independent Candidates

"Candidates intending to participate in the Nairobi Gubernatorial By-election as independent candidates shall submit their names and symbols that they intend to use during the by-election for purposes of nomination of independent candidates to IEBC on or before 28th Dec. 2020," the statement read.

The seat fell vacant after the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko two weeks ago and his deputy governor nominee battling a court case over suitability.

The office was declared vacant last Monday following the swearing-in of Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura as acting governor.

Political parties are expected to conduct primaries and resolve any disputes arising from the exercise before submitting a list of nominees to the commission by January 11.
