The US Government has welcomed the move by Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga to call off the anti-government demonstrations. 

In a statement on Monday, April 3, US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman commended President William Ruto and the former Prime Minister for climbing down and agreeing to have a peaceful dialogue. 

“We welcome the agreement by President Ruto and former PM Raila Odinga to establish a bipartisan process to find solutions that benefit all Kenyans. We commend both leaders for their commitment to peaceful dialogue, and call on all parties to support this process,” she tweeted.

In the State of the Nation Address on Sunday President Ruto said that he had carefully listened to Odinga and agreed to reconstitute the selection panel for the IEBC through a bipartisan parliamentary process.

Raila in a presser at his Capitol Hill office later called off nationwide anti-government protests and agreed to hold bi-partisan engagement in Parliament.

He however warned that the demonstration would resume in a week should the engagement fail to bear fruit.

“In view of the foregoing, we stand down our demonstrations on Monday, April 3, 2023. We reserve our rights to call for demonstrations should this process fail to bear fruit, should there be no meaningful engagement or response from Ruto our counteroffer is to continue with our demonstrations after one week,” Raila announced.
