A middle-aged man suspected to be a thug was killed by an irate mob that stormed a police post in Makutano Town, Kapenguria.

The man had been detained at Makutano police post.

He was being transferred to Kapenguria police station when the mob overwhelmed the police and descended on him with stones and pieces of wood until he died about 100 metres away from the post.

A number of police officers were injured during the scuffle.

“The police tried to restrain but the public overpowered the police. In the process, officers sustained injuries as follows: Cpl Ali Mohammed suffered a brushed left wrist and also his mobile phone made Techno 19 valued at Sh24,000/- was snatched, PC Bare Aden lost one tooth and PC Juma Dalo was injured on the right rib area and both knees,” a police report of the incident indicates.

Kirui asked members of the public to desist from taking law into their own hands saying there is a legal process that ought to be followed.

“In case of any suspect just report to the police. Let’s cooperate because we are trying to end theft.”
